Featured food: Fish flavoured egg custard
Another social issue episode... Well, more like awareness of a disease. This time is dyslexia, the female lead has difficulty reading. I didn't like this episode as it is yet another cliche story, the guy chases the girl because she's pretty. *rolls eyes*
Jiang Ming is a rich boy who works as a apprentice chef in a well known restaurant, but he doesn't like to follow the rules. He threw in the towel after an argument with the chef and found himself locked outside his house as he forgot his keys. True to drama style, it starts to rain and he meets Yu Mei, a pretty young woman who offers him the umbrella but he refuses it.
He meets Yu Mei again some days later and followed her to the midnight diner. Yeah, you can roll your eyes again! ;D Yu Mei goes to the diner regularly as she is trying to find the original taste of an egg custard which she had tasted in her childhood. The diner boss had been making many egg custards to recreate that taste but so far he had not been successful.
Jiang Ming realises that Yu Mei will be visiting the diner often so he decided to get a job there. Well, sort of become the diner boss's apprentice. Now, the diner boss was not keen to have him around... The irony isn't it, remember the early episodes of this series where he allowed the girl to stay at his diner and even cooked fish flakes rice for her?! Talk about double standards... *smh and rolls eyes*
Back to Yu Mei, apparently she is a model. But not the usual kind, she is actually a body double... Meaning that if there were any nude scenes she would be the one who takes off her clothes. She had been doing that all her life and one day Hermes saw her at one of the photoshoots. Being the usual busybody, Hermes told the other diners about it. Jiang Ming overheard and didn't quite believe it...
It was the truth, and the other regular diners were also in the know. If you remember another earlier episode from this series about a famous actress, Sun Ke Wei... Yu Mei was the body double for her in the movie. So the guys in the diner were swooning over her body and Jiang Ming got angry.
One night, he had the chance to visit a photoshoot and he saw Yu Mei there. He confronted her after that, asking her why she had to do such a thing for a living. Well, you can't blame him because he doesn't know about her dyslexia problem. It was the only thing she could do and she had been earning a decent living from it. He was also confused why she did not respond to the love letter he gave her earlier.
Some time later, Jiang Ming found out about her disease after a chat with the diner boss. He decided to work hard to make the egg custard for Yu Mei. At least some more food scenes in this episode... :D
Jiang Ming receives a call from his family and he had to go to Shanghai... Meanwhile, Yu Mei was also tired of her modelling life and she didn't continue her contract. Jiang Ming finally makes the egg custard of her childhood, after getting to know more about her. He added some Lande rice as Yu Mei was originally from Chongqing, a major city in China. (Don't ask me! I can't really remember the story much now... :P)
Yu Mei was so touched that she teared up... And Jiang Ming proposes to her, this time with an animated sketchbook... Aww, smart guy! :D
It ends happily with a video call from Jiang Ming and Yu Mei in Shanghai. Jiang Ming basically plagiarised the midnight diner! Hahah!! The only difference is that his diner has a lady boss... Duh! :P
Not really a fan of egg custards, especially this one that has a fish flavour... :O Eggs are already fishy in taste and added steamed fish sauce... Omoo... but I guess some might love it!
