Featured food: Ginger Fried Rice
Here is another episode which deals with social issues, this time about dementia or Alzheimer... (I forgot the translation! ^_^V) It was a bit difficult to watch this story because it reminded me of my family members who had suffered from it and had passed on... :'(
The story starts with a middle-aged woman named Hai Fen dancing with one of the regular diners Ma Ling Ling, outside the midnight diner. :D Some funny moments here when Ah Xian tries to flirt with Hai Fen and got dismissed as being her son. Haha!
Hai Fen is a divorcee and her daughter is getting married soon. She meets with her daughter, Xiao Li and her daughter's fiance, Jack. It's nice to see a familiar face, Jack has appeared in the Taiwanese drama Metro of Love. They met at the midnight diner to discuss about the marriage preparations and while they were there, the diner boss prepared for them the ginger fried rice.
Hai Fen and her daughter goes shopping for items and Hai Fen had forgotten that she had already bought a set of cutlery the day before. Xiao Li and Jack realises that their mother is suffering from early onset of Alzheimer's. Hai Fen actually knows about this but she has kept it a secret from her daughter.
More wedding preparations are underway, this time with Xiao Li's father, Li Kai. Li Kai has a new girlfriend and they meet up at the diner to discuss things. Haha, seems like the midnight diner is a famous place for discussions! Hai Fen has to face her ex-husband and had some disagreement with his new girlfriend regarding the wedding card... Oh dear...
Li Kai wondered what was wrong with his ex-wife and Xiao Li finally told her father that her mum was suffering from the disease. Feeling remorse or somewhat? I don't really get this, maybe he still loved Hai Fen and somehow their marriage fell apart or something... Nevertheless, he found out about it and rushes to his ex-wife's side. Haha, some making-out part here... ;D
Moving on with the wedding preparations, a sweet moment at the wedding dress shop... Xiao Li looks so pretty and Hai Fen too! Jack is looking handsome as well... :D
Meanwhile, Li Kai was still feeling distraught after learning about his ex-wife's disease. He goes to the midnight diner and the diner boss serves him the ginger fried rice. He took a bite and realises that the taste is the same as his ex-wife's fried rice. The diner boss explained that one day, Hai Fen came to his diner and taught him how to fry the rice. She did so because she was afraid she will forget how to make it and her ex-husband wouldn't be able to eat it anymore. Aww...
Hai Fen's disease seemed to have gotten worse, one night while she was out shopping she suddenly couldn't remember anything. She felt so lost and started crying. Omoo! :'(( This part made me sad because there was one day that my mum came out of the kitchen with the same facial expression as Hai Fen. It scared me, she said at that moment she didn't know what, who or where she was... :O
The wedding day finally arrived but during the ceremony, Hai Fen had a break down and started blabbing nonsense. Her disease had struck her at the wrong moment...
This story is quite stressful eh?! ;D Well, it does deal with reality... Li Kai's new girlfriend confronts Hai Fen. She thinks that Hai Fen is doing it on purpose to get her ex-husband back. But in the end, she left with words that will ring in her heart forever... Hai Fen said what good will you get if you forget everything and everyone that you love? Tough words... so sad...huhu.. The new girlfriend leaves Li Kai and he moves back in with Hai Fen to take care of her...
Actually, the whole family stayed by Hai Fen's side. They labelled items around the house, took photos of themselves and pasted it on the fridge for Hai Fen to read whenever she forget them. Funny moment here where Jack wants a group hug too!
Hmm, a sad ending for this story... I'm not sure if Hai Fen commit suicide or she was just wandering in her old memories and it ends with her reminiscing the romantic moment where Li Kai proposes to her by the beach... :'((
I've not had ginger fried rice before. But during the episode, it is stated that it helps with aches and pains during the cold months...something like that, I think! :P Feeling hungry now, I guess any type of fried rice would be great! ;D
